Books Over Bullets!
Upon deep observation, it was clear to Brady and I that literacy amongst our students was an overwhelming issue… Quite frankly the students in the schools in which we were located, simply could not read. As a result, Books Over Bullets was born, a 12 week co-ed book club to respond to the literacy needs of the students.
Every Saturday from 10am to 1pm, students from the age range of 8 to 146met at the Carver Library to read books. We would also invite men from our “Black Men Read” initiative to come out and read to the youth.
Youth were required to register for a library card, check out one book a week and returned the following week with an essay on the book they chose.
